Today’s Quote:  “True compassion means not only feeling another’s pain but also being moved to help relieve it.” – Daniel Goleman

The dictionary definition of compassion is “a feeling of deep sympathy and sorrow for another who is stricken by misfortune, accompanied by a strong desire to alleviate the suffering.”  I was speaking to a good friend of mine about a recent situation where I felt defeated.  I don’t take well to not being able to do something to help in situations especially when I feel very passionate about the cause.  We got on the conversation of how we live in a time where every one is numb and self absorbed.  We live in a time where the goal is to work on self, be a better person, have a lot of success, and we over look the needs of others.  We become numb to other’s and their situations because we hear so much negativity regularly we just aren’t moved by it.

But we are not meant to be that way.  Humans by nature are emotional creatures.  We are born to feel.  We know compassion before we can speak or walk.  It’s naturally inside of us to feel.  Daniel Goleman says “True compassion means not only feeling another’s pain but also being moved to relieve it”.  So today and this week I want us to feel true compassion. Don’t just say “Oh I’m sorry to hear that”,  don’t just say “Damn, that’s sad”.  Truly empathize and feel what are friends, family members, or partners are going through.  And don’t just stop there, be moved to do something.   Take it up a notch too and try to extend compassion to those that you don’t know!  Because at times its easy to give compassion to people we love, but maybe its someone you don’t love, someone you don’t know personally, that is seeking your help.

It’s a challenge to think outside of self but I truly believe and try to live by “my life isn’t about me it’s about all of the people I connect with while I am here.”  Put yourself in the shoes of another this week and truly show compassion, be moved to help someone, be moved to save someone.  You never know what you have that someone else may need.  Whether it’s a hug, an experience to share, an ear, or lunch.  Don’t let the rest of the world make you cold.  Don’t fall into that pattern of feeling numb because its unnatural!  Its not real to not feel.
We are here together to care about each other.  No matter how much we want to separate ourselves from people, the truth is we are here because we need each other.

Today’s Affirmation: Compassion is a gift that I always have to share with others.
