We all know that to be spiritual we are supposed to be compassionate, but with all the negativity and injustice we see around us, it’s easy for our egos to feel justified being judgmental and critical. However, when you find reasons to feel grateful to someone, you are bridging the gulf of separation between the two of you. You can’t be thankful and resentful at the same time. That connection you feel when you are thankful is your shared humanity – it is the ground of compassion. A compassionate heart is accepting and forgiving not only to others, but to yourself as well. SANSKRIT MANTRA: Karuna Hum (I am compassion). 1.) Write down the names of anyone with whom you don’t always see eye to eye with, but would sincerely wish to be kind to. LOL….I’m going to do this mentally. 2.) For each person, write down at least one admirable quality you appreciate in them. Let that feeling of appreciation suggest a gesture of kindness you can make to them. Their creative abilities I have nothing nice to say about this person so I’m going to continue to work on this. I have nothing nice to say about this person so I’m going to continue to work on this. Their need to be accepted or prove a point. 3.) For each of these people, write down something you share in common and how that can be a bridge of compassion. For example, perhaps you both have an elderly mother you worry about, or share a passion for a particular cause. Doing this mentally. 4.) Daily Reflection: When people rub me the wrong way, it is a direct reflection of something that I need to focus on within myself. It doesn’t necessarily have to be something I am going through or embodying at the moment but at some point in my life. Just as I was in search of myself and had to experience life in order to arrive where I am today, I have to know and respect that others will go through the same changes at their own paces. I accept the differences I have with people and I will attempt to find a commonality among us to build on the positives. This doesn’t mean I have to interact with or be friends with everyone. This just means that I must respect others, their choices, and the paths their lives may take. It is okay for me to protect and be selective about who I choose to allow in my personal space. This does not mean I hold any animosity or ill feelings towards anyone, this just means I am in tune with myself and I choose to be careful of the energy that I allow to penetrate my personal space.
