“Renewal requires opening yourself up to new ways of thinking and feeling.” ― Deborah Day

The burdens we carry around with us have become part of our attitudes, habits, beliefs, and behaviors, but they are not permanent. Habits are the outcome of old decisions and they can be changed only through new decisions and choices.

In today’s meditation, we discover that the most important decision we can make is to embrace the possibility of our true self. When we let higher intelligence do the work, getting rid of burdens isn’t a burden.

CENTERING THOUGHT: I find joy in my healing and recovery.

SANSKRIT MANTRA: Siddho Hum (I am perfect).

1.) Write down the ways in which you glimpsed your true self today, through moments of beauty, truth, creativity, and bliss. Include how these moments made you feel. Remind yourself that this is a reality that is always yours.

I had glimpses of my true self when I began my day with morning rituals and took the time to catch up on my work before attending to the needs and concerns of others. This caused a trickle effect in which I was able to become organized and gain balance from my weekend. From this point forward I was then able to help others and be of assistance with a cheerful heart and not a grudging spirit. These instances didn’t necessarily make me feel happy but they allowed me to move gracefully through my day. Another instance when I got a glimpse of my true self was when I consciously made the effort to avoid a potential argument. It’s easy to become submerged in our own stresses and mishaps throughout the day and forgetting that our loved ones and partners have experiences of their own. Many times we can see and feel disagreements arise but as of late I have taken the time to think and take others into consideration before I act or respond. This has not only kept me at peace but it has also enhanced my interactions with others.

2.) Think about the moments today when you had to struggle and use effort. Now describe how these moments of struggle made you feel.

Today I struggled with patience and it required focused energy to not only check my ego but to be careful in my choice of words. Its easy to hurt or offend others but taking the time to not do so especially when its most difficult can be highly rewarding.

3.) As part of the healing process, how could you remove some everyday burdens you are carrying? Write down three actions you can take to lighten your load – physically, psychologically, or emotionally. For example, you could spend more time with people who lift you up and emanate positive energy.

There are numerous ways that I could remove some of the burdens that I carry daily. Oddly many of them can be found in my phone which is why I have already become detached from it. I refuse to be a slave to my phone be it social media, text threads, or phone calls. If I wish to answer, then I will. Sometimes it takes me a week to reply to texts and thats ok. Living in the present moment is hard when you can scroll back hours in the day and take in every detail and thought someone has decided to put into the world about their day. Outside of the interaction that I have with my phone, three things that I can do to lighten my load are:

  • Not bear the burdens of my loved ones; it’s ok to not fix everyones problems.
  • Don’t take anything personal; everyone is walking their path & some things have nothing to do with you.
  • Always aim to be a good person, even if that means from afar.

4.) Daily Reflection:

Sometimes in order to help and restore ourselves we have to show others tough love. We have to put ourselves first so that we can be whole and well enough to serve others when it is necessary. I am unapologetic about the decisions that I make when I am acting from a balanced and whole place. If ever I am feeling depleted and uncertain I will do the things that are necessary in order for me regain balance. If I don’t properly take care of myself then my relationships and work will suffer. I promise myself to unplug when necessary and say “No” when I feel that I need to put myself or my priorities first. It is okay to take the time to heal and when I am unsure about what healing requires from me at any time, I will be still and wait on God.
